I can't believe I haven't reviewed this one yet. As an adult looking back at cinema, Gladiator is, without a doubt, my all-time favorite movie. If I could give it 6 stars, I would in a heartbeat to sell just how much I love it.
I've watched the theatrical cut easily 50 times over the years, and it never gets old (though, side note: I watched the extended cut once, and honestly? Trash. Stick to the theatrical masterpiece!)

Unmatched Storytelling & Performances
The character arcs and acting are peak cinema. Every single actor brought their character to life so vividly that you are completely locked in from frame one. Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius is a legend, and this remains the best character he has ever played.
The Opening Sequence
That forest battle scene at the grand opening is pure epic scale. My only regret with this movie is that I couldn't afford to go to the theater when it first came out, so I didn't get to experience that opening on the big screen until years later.
Sets, Costumes & Overcoming Tragedy
The set and costume design hit an absolute home run, creating a gritty, tangible ancient Rome. Even when hit with unexpected real-life tragedy - the passing of Oliver Reed (Proximo) mid-production - the filmmaking team managed to weave together his remaining scenes brilliantly without compromising the story.
The Score
The music is legendary. If you've ever wondered why Pirates of the Caribbean has such an epic, soaring soundtrack, it's because Hans Zimmer composed the music for Gladiator first, laying the blueprint for epic 2000s film scores.
Even the Mistakes are Great
I literally made a video breaking down all the movie mistakes and historical goofs in Gladiator, but even with those technical flaws, I don't care at all. The emotional core of the film is so strong that a few visible gas canisters or modern glitches don't ruin the magic whatsoever.
The Iconic Moments
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"
That line, along with the legendary "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius..." speech in the Colosseum, represents peak cinema writing and delivery.
One Final Note on the Sequel
I HATE the sequel they made. As far as I'm concerned, I have to pretend Gladiator II doesn't even exist so it doesn't taint my view of this absolute masterpiece.
The Verdict
It's raw, emotional, epic, and endlessly rewatchable. Gladiator isn't just a great movie - it's the gold standard of storytelling. Easy 5 out of 5 stars.
