Friday Nights, Blockbuster, and Spotting Secrets
Growing up, Friday nights were sacred because they were movie nights. I distinctly remember the pure anticipation of walking into Blockbuster, praying that a new release actually had a copy left on the shelf. Sometimes it took weeks of checking back before the movie I wanted was finally sitting there.
But even as a kid, I wasn't just watching the screen, I was catching the details. I spotted bloopers, continuity errors, and hidden things that felt like messages meant just for me. The entire illusion and architecture of filmmaking completely fascinated me. I loved the behind the scenes magic.
The Most Shy Kid in School
Irony has a funny sense of humor. Before graduating high school, I managed a performing arts multi-purpose theater. My crowning achievement back then was manually stitching together a massive 18-foot by 22-foot projector screen to be used for movies and stage backdrops. Decades later, that theater is still using the exact screen I sewed with my own hands.
I've always preferred being behind the scenes. In fact, I was voted "Most Shy" in my school. I never, in a million years, thought I would end up on a screen myself. Yet, here we are.
The Ultimate Dream (And a Rant on Modern Hollywood)
My ultimate life goal is to write and direct my own feature film one day. No, I can't tell you the plot because I don't need you stealing it! But if life goes right, maybe one day you'll see my name on the big screen. And you can absolutely bet I will plaster that thing with hidden Easter eggs from top to bottom.
If you ask me my favorite movie of all time, the crown goes to Gladiator. (And let's be honest, Gladiator 2 was an absolute stain on its legacy). It breaks my heart to see modern studios chasing cheap cash grabs, prioritizing the quantity of content over the quality of raw storytelling. The original Gladiator isn't just an epic tale of revenge; it's a masterful look at the inner workings of government systems.
The Nostalgia Vault
It's hard to pick just one childhood favorite, but the one that routinely forced me to wait weeks at Blockbuster before a copy finally became available was Jonny Quest. That was the one I constantly chased down.
As for other classics I loved growing up? Disney's 1973 cartoon Robin Hood and the original Jungle Book are high on the list. For TV shows, I was a product of the golden era of animation. Near the top for me will always be Pinky and the Brain, Dick Tracy, Darkwing Duck, TaleSpin, and Batman: The Animated Series. I could keep rambling into Gilligan's Island and a hundred other cartoon blocks, but we'd be here all day.
